Biomembrane-based in vitro models.

Biological membranes play a fundamental role in virtually every cellular process, regulating transport, signaling, molecular recognition, and interactions with external agents. However, studying these complex systems directly in living cells is often challenging due to their structural complexity and the multitude of simultaneous biological processes. Simplified biomimetic membrane models provide an effective alternative by reproducing key structural and physicochemical features of natural cell membranes under well-controlled experimental conditions.

At Nano4Med, we use liposome-based membrane models to mimic the composition and properties of different biological membranes. By modifying the lipid composition, membrane charge, and fluidity, we recreate membrane environments representative of various cell types and biological barriers. These biomimetic platforms enable the systematic investigation of membrane interactions while maintaining experimental reproducibility and precise control over membrane characteristics.

These in vitro membrane models allow us to investigate fundamental biological processes, including the interaction of nanoparticles, proteins, peptides, and drugs with biological membranes. They provide valuable insights into membrane permeability, adsorption, fusion, membrane disruption, and transport mechanisms, contributing to a better understanding of the molecular events that govern therapeutic efficacy and biological responses.

Beyond advancing fundamental research, biomimetic membrane models provide biologically relevant platforms for investigating the interactions of bioactive molecules with biological membranes before progressing to cell-based or animal studies. Their use helps reduce experimental complexity, minimize reliance on animal testing in accordance with the principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement), and contribute to the rational development of safer and more effective therapeutic strategies.
